The Volkswagen Tiguan was launched in South Africa in 2008 and since then 41 000 units have been sold. As a result, the Tiguan was crowned as the best-selling medium SUV in South Africa in 2020.
Rather than reinventing their popular family car, Volkswagen opted for a mid-product-cycle update to keep things fresh. However, it is notable that the Tiguan did not just get a facelift. Although the most prominent update in aesthetics is found upfront, there is much more to the new Tiguan than just a new face.
In short, what is new?
- Enhanced design.
- New technological highlights.
- The new Tiguan will be available with three engines to choose from.
Starting with aesthetics upfront, the Tiguan received a new bonnet. Following design cues from the VW Arteon, the most obvious change is the wider grille and restyled VW logo. Now as standard, you get new LED headlights, while IQ. Light is an optional extra and a redesigned bumper gives the car a wider look. A notable update at the rear is the addition of the TIGUAN name on the tailgate as well as a newly designed bumper. The Tiguan also sports exciting new wheel and colour options.
The new Tiguan can be upgraded with optional features such as a trailer hitch, panoramic sunroof, Black Style Package (black roof rails and decorative trims, black exterior mirror housing, privacy glass for the rear windows, and black 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels), Discover Pro entertainment system with wireless App-Connect, IQ Lights: Matrix LED, Heads-up display and the IQ Drive Package (Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, Park Assist, and Autonomous Emergency Braking) and the Trailer Manoeuvring System.
On the inside, the Tiguan received a touch-sensitive air conditioning and heating control panel with rear-window, windscreen and seat heating functions incorporated. The Tiguan has a new steering wheel, an updated infotainment unit as well as an optional Harmon Kardon audio system.
The new Tiguan’s advanced driver assist system, IQ. Drive, assists the driver up to 210 km/h through Adaptive Cruise Control, Travel Assist, and Lane Assist. The Adaptive Cruise Control is predictive in a way that it calculates speed-limit changes, recognizes town boundary signs, roundabouts and junctions and as a result, adjust the vehicle's speed accordingly.
The model range consists of three specification lines: the Tiguan which is the base derivative, the Tiguan Life, and the Tiguan R-Line.
The new Tiguan is available with one diesel and two petrol engines.
- 1.4 TSI with 110kW of power.
- 2.0 TSI with 162kW of power.
- 2.0 TDI producing 130kW of power. (Diesel.)
